Rugby 101:
- Players: There are two common types of rugby play, 15s and 7s. 15s plays with 15 players and 7s uses only 7. At W&M, we compete with both a 15s and 7s teams.
- Field: 100 x 70 meters long, 22 meters on each end known as the 'try zone'. Touching the rugby ball in the opponents try zone results in a 'try' worth 5 points. A successful conversion kick through the goal posts after a try is worth 2 points.
- Time: There are two 40 minute halves, one 10 minute half time, and no timeouts.
- Scoring: Try- 5 points
- Conversion- 2 points
- Drop kick- 3 points, drop kicking the ball through the opponents posts during play
- Penalty kick- 3 points
- Gameplay: Game starts with a kickoff to opposing team, there is continuous play until a knock on, penalty, or try occur. The ball can only be advanced by throwing backwards and kicking. Forwards ball movement in passes or knocks results in scrums. When a player is tackled, the ball must be released on the ground. If the ball goes out of play, the team loses possession and a line out is formed to throw the ball back in. The team with the most points at the end of 80 minutes wins.10
